December 28, 1979 is considered the Kharkiv cogeneration plant’ s birthday when the first power unit with electric capacity of 120 MW and thermal output of 175 gcal/g was commissioned. Today the OJSC «Kharkiv cogeneration plant-5» consists of:
- two power units rated at 120 MW each with the total thermal output of 350 gcal/g (2 х 175 gcal/g);
- one power unit rated at 300 MW and the power transmission line with the calorific power of 350 gcal/g;
- four water-heating boilers of «ПТВМ-180» type with the productive capacity of 180 gcal/g each. «Kharkiv cogeneration plant-5» is one of the largest Ukrainian heat and power plants intended for producing electric power and providing thermal power to the town of Kharkiv and Kharkiv region.
With respect to the electric and thermal power production, the installed capacities are 540 MW and 1420 gcal/g, respectively.
The following major equipment is installed at power units of Kharkiv cogeneration plant-5:
- Power unit 1 – a boiler unit of «ТГМЕ-464» type, a turbo-unit of «Т-110/120-130» type, a generator of «ТВФ-120-2УЗ» type, a transformer of «ТДЦ-125000/110» type.
- Power unit 2 – a boiler unit of «ТГМЕ-464» type, a turbo-unit of «Т-110/120-130» type, a generator of «ТВФ-120-2УЗ» type, a transformer of «ТДЦ-125000/110» type.
- Power unit 3 – a boiler unit of «ТГМП-344А» type, a turbo-unit of «Т-250/300-240» type, a generator of «ТВВ-320-2УЗ» type, a transformer of «ТДЦ-400000/110» type.
The following projects are being implemented by the Company:
- frequency control of an asynchronous motor drive during operation of network pumps at the reduced rotations (project implementation term - 2009), saving rates – UAH 2.7 million per year;
- power complex deploying a heat-recovery turbine expender (project implementation term – 2009-2010), saving rates – UAH 4.6 million per year;
- cooling tower No. 3 (project implementation term – 2007-2009), commissioning of cooling tower No.3 will enable the Company to provide additional electricity output amounting to 100.3 million kW-h per year;
- power unit No. 4 with a combined-cycle plant «ПГУ-370» (project implementation term – 2009-2012). By deploying the combined-cycle technology, the Company will be able to reduce by 20% the cost per unit during production of 1 kW-h of electricity and to provide flexibility of the equipment operation and 7 years pay-back period.
In accordance with the general plant development schedule two district-heating units rated at 250/300 MW and two water-heating boilers of «KBГМ-180» type are expected to be built on site.
