Before 1950 Lutsk was illuminated using two DC diesel power plants and thermal power plant built in 1909. In the post-war period, the first significant source of electricity in Volyn was 4.1 MW industrial thermal power plant commissioned in Lutsk in 1950. The situation with electricity supply changed after the commissioning in 1950s of Dobrotvirs'ka power plant in the neighbouring Lviv region. From there high-voltage lines started to run to Volyn, too. On June 1, 1960 Lutsk Electricity Grid was established on the basis of Volyn power plants, renamed in September 1963 to Volyn Electricity Grid. State-owned joint-stock company «Volynoblenergo», established in August 1995 on the basis of Volyn OPEM, in May 2000 was renamed into OJSC «Volynoblenergo». Since March 2011 pursuant to the current legislation of Ukraine OJSC «Volynoblenergo» was renamed into Public joint stock company (PJSC) «Volynoblenergo». Currently the company consists of 20 departments, 18 production services, 3 sectors and 17 branches. The core business of the power company includes distribution and transmission of electricity to consumers. Assets of the company comprise over 25,000 km of power grid (including 24,000 km of overhead lines and over 1,000 km of cable lines). The company owns 5,600 of transformer substations (including 111 of 35 kV and 110 kV voltages) with total transformer capacity of 2,256 MVA. OJSC «Volynoblenergo» services over 340,000 individuals and nearly 10,000 corporate customers. PJSC «Volynoblenergo» Development Programme includes a wide range of technical projects, such as construction of new substations, modernisation of the existing facilities, replacement of outdated switching equipment with modern one, upgrading of relay protection systems, automation and telemetry, installation of overhead lines.
