Large-scale development of electrical power engineering in Western Ukraine started with the construction of Dobrotvirs'ka thermal power plant. Between 1951 and 1959 the power plant was commissioned to include 25 MW, 50 MW and 100 MW turbo-generators and two 150 MW power units. Formation of Western Ukrainian power industry took place in «Lvivenergo» company, an umbrella body for local thermal power plant, the regional electric power grids and relevant servicing companies. During 1962 - 1969 Burshtyns'ka TPP with its 200 MW power units was completed. OJSC «Zakhidenergo» was founded in 1995 based on «Lvivenergo» thermal power plants (Burshtyns'ka and Dobrotvirs'ka TPPs) and Ladyzhyn TPP earlier run by «Vinnytsiaenergo» power company. Core business of «Zakhidenergo» includes production, supply, purchase and sale in Ukraine and abroad of electric energy, energy produced for electricity and heat supplies, as well as energy-related by-products and means, equipment and devices used in this field. Since July 2002 Burshtyns'ka TPP operates within the ENTSO-E united European power grid, being core part of the «Burshtyns'ka TPP Island».
Currently Burshtyns'ka TPP completed the project on upgrading the power plant's outdoor switchgear which improved TPP's reliability and dynamic rating, as well as boosted energy export potential to 650 MW. The facility is close to complete the modernisation of the power unit 7 by increasing its capacity to 210 MW and extending service life for 15 years. This year it is planed to shutdown for reconstruction the power unit 5 in order to achieve the parameters similar to the power unit 7. The cost of the project makes UAH 447.8 million (VAT excluded).
At Dobrotvirs'ka TPP the Company plans to upgrade the power unit 8 (capacity increase, service life extension, environmental improvements), at estimated cost of some UAH 478.8 million (VAT excluded). In perspective - completion of the power unit 9 of Dobrotvirs'ka TPP-2 (225 MW capacity with desulphurisation system) at estimated cost of some UAH 3,500 million.
PJSC «Zakhidenergo» was the first in Ukraine's thermal power segment to receive ISO-9001 quality certificate.
